Eilish Sparks Talk About Mental Health

In case you’ve been living under a rock, let me bring you up to speed about the 18-year-old who has been flooding our news feeds and fueling our crying episodes. The neon green enthusiast just won a stupid number of Grammys but not for the annoying pop songs we’re used to. She is adding her personal stories about mental health to her music and changing the way we think about young stars.

It might’ve been a nightmare

To anyone who might care

Thought I could fly (fly)

So I stepped off the golden, mm

Nobody cried (cried, cried, cried, cried)

Nobody even noticed

I saw them standing right there

Kinda thought they might care (might care, might care)

Eilish is known for her beautiful, yet depressing music as well as her fashion style. Fitted in oversized everything, she makes a statement about being in the public eye and constantly being sexualized. What started as an outstanding “F YOU” to the world, Eilish eventually made this her style and now everyone is adopting the look… I mean now we have an excuse to wear baggy clothes in public, so thanks Billie! Her fashion isn’t the only thing that’s being noticed, it’s also her dark songs that people are curious about. Mental health is something that many people struggle with, especially after being in the spotlight, however this young star has chosen to share her darkness with the world. In her latest song “everything i wanted”, Eilish talks about a disturbing dream in which she committed suicide, and no one cared. Although this may be something people struggle with, it’s taboo to talk about in music especially for her mostly young fan base. Talking about such a sensitive topic in her lyrics is unusual for what we are used to seeing on the top charts.

Her lyrics aren’t the only thing that people are having a hard time digesting. In her various music videos, she has cringe-worthy material from having a tarantula in her mouth, to having cigarettes put out on her face, Eilish is not afraid to make a statement and leave her viewers uncomfortable. So why is she popular? She gives listeners something to connect too and remember they are not alone. She is re-defining the stereotype of young artists and sparking the conversation about mental health which has be shoved under the covers for too long. Whether you like her music or not, Billie Eilish is truly changing not only the world of music, but how we think about struggle. Eilish is undoubtedly herself and is giving the world the authenticity, we have been sheltered from.
